TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

NEVER STOP
developing.

EVERY REFEREE HAS SOMEWHERE TO GO NEXT

Development doesn't stop after your first whistle.

From your first appointments to more challenging levels of rugby, Berkshire Rugby Referees provides the training, coaching, assessment and support to help you keep progressing.

Because becoming a better referee isn't something that happens in one course. It happens game by game.

HOW WE DEVELOP REFEREES

MORE THAN
JUST THE
laws.

Good refereeing is built through experience.

Knowing the laws matters. But so do positioning, communication, game management, fitness, decision-making and confidence.

That's why our development programme combines regular training with coaching, match assessment and support from other referees.

01
TRAIN TOGETHER

Monthly training

Our referee training meetings take place on the third Tuesday of every month, bringing referees together to learn, discuss and develop.

02
LEARN ON THE FIELD

Coaching

As referees progress, coaches can attend their matches and provide feedback during the game as well as discussing performance afterwards.

03
KNOW WHERE YOU ARE

Assessment & progression

Regular match assessments help ensure referees are operating safely and at the appropriate level, while identifying opportunities for further development and progression.

04
READY FOR THE GAME

Referee fitness

During the off-season we provide free, referee-focused fitness sessions led by an RFU-accredited fitness coach.

05
NEVER REFEREE ALONE

Community

Our referee community continues away from formal training. Members use our WhatsApp community to discuss games, ask questions, share experiences and get advice from other referees.

EVERY 3RD TUESDAY
MONTHLY TRAINING

Learn together.
Talk rugby.
Get better.

Our monthly training meetings give Berkshire referees the opportunity to step away from match day and focus on development.

Sessions can explore laws, positioning, decision-making, game management and the situations referees encounter on the field. Just as importantly, they give referees the opportunity to learn from one another.

DEVELOPMENT IN THE REAL GAME

THE BEST
CLASSROOM
IS THE
pitch.

01 / COACHING

Feedback when it matters.

As referees develop, coaching provides another pair of experienced eyes on the game.

A coach can attend a referee's match, observe what is happening and provide practical feedback, followed by discussion after the final whistle.

02 / ASSESSMENT

Progress with purpose.

Assessment helps us understand how a referee is performing and whether their appointments remain appropriate for their current level.

Reports identify strengths and areas for development and form part of Berkshire Rugby Referees' grading process.

OFF-SEASON FITNESS

FIT FOR
THE game.

Refereeing is physical. We train for it.

Being in the right position to make the right decision requires more than law knowledge. Referees need the fitness to stay with the game from the opening whistle to the last.

During the off-season, Berkshire referees can take part in free referee-focused fitness sessions delivered by an RFU-accredited fitness coach.

THE REFEREE COMMUNITY

THE GAME
ENDS.
THE TALKING
doesn't.

Sometimes the best development starts with a question.

Every referee comes away from matches with moments they want to talk about.

Our WhatsApp community gives Berkshire referees somewhere to discuss their games, ask questions, seek advice and learn from the experiences of officials across Berkshire Rugby Referees.

Whether you're new to the whistle or have years of experience, there is always someone to talk rugby with.
